Our Review Of A Coffin Bay Oyster Farm
We had the most wonderful time with a day trip out on a boat tour to visit the world-famous Coffin Bay Oyster Farms. We would love to share our experience with you!
What’s At Coffin Bay South Australia?
Coffin Bay is a small, picturesque coastal town located on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It is renowned for its stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, and world-famous seafood! Personally… I was there for the seafood!
Coffin Bay Oyster Farm From Adelaide?
Coffin Bay is situated on the western side of the Eyre Peninsula, about a 45-minute drive from Port Lincoln. To get to Port Lincoln from Adelaide, it’s roughly a 7-hour drive. You could probably get there faster, but we stopped for toilet breaks and food.
If you don’t have your own car it’s easy enough to hire one through Rentalcars.com. You don’t need a 4-wheel drive to get to Coffin Bay itself, but be aware that many off-road tracks around the area and Coffin Bay National Park might need one, so be sure to read the signs and use your common sense. Look out for loose sand that will bog you in or dirt road tracks that will pop your tires.

What About Accommodation At Coffin Bay?
Coffin Bay itself is small and very popular in the summer months. You probably want to book your accommodation fairly far in advance such as the Discovery Parks or you can do what we did and find a place in Port Lincoln and just drive down for the day.
Other alternatives are caravaning in Coffin Bay or looking at AirBnB’s.
We were happy to stay in Port Lincoln for the extra options for shops and restaurants. This is all dependent on what type of trip you want or how long and how many people are going. Coffin Bay is much quieter and more relaxing, so it’s a bit of give and take about what’s important to you.

Our Experience Visiting The Oyster Farm
For me getting out on the boat to see the pristine blue water and getting to taste the world-famous oytsers fresh from the Coffin Bay Oyster Farm was the highlight of my Eyre Peninsular trip.
The boat for me wasn’t too choppy, but you can see from my son’s face he’s extremely sensitive to seasickness. The boat itself is extremely comfortable.
There are lots of windows to look out of and soft seats to enjoy your ride.
It was such a delight to see the vast area of Coffin Bay and the tour guides were excellent in explaining the history of the area on the way out to the farm.
Once you arrive at the Coffin Bay Oyster Farm it’s time to stop the boat and get changed into the waders they provide and get out the GoPro if you have one.
They take you down the ladder into the farm to let you see and walk around for yourself. We had a ball.

After a bit of fun enjoying the farm and investigating the baskets full of various-sized Coffin Bay oysters, it’s time (in my view) for the best part! To eat some of the freshest, world-renowned Coffin Bay Oysters.

Some of them are so big they fit in the palm of your hand! There is an option of wine to go with your Coffin Bay Oysters and various condiments to try. I was surprised by the hot sauces and gave them a try, but my favourite is definitely just natural.
After your delicious meal and drink it’s time to take photos and then the boat starts to make its way back to shore.
We stopped and saw seals and sea birds on the rocks on the way home which was so special to see.

Overall, our visit to the Coffin Bay Oyster Farm was definitely a highlight of our Eyre Peninsula trip over the Christmas vacation period and I would recommend to anyone out in the area to give this a go.
If you have young children it might be difficult to keep them on the boat for a long period of time so over 12s might be more suitable.
